Campsite at Eureka |
Austin Pass 7212 ft is very steep. The riders had an immediate uphill from 5500 feet to 7200 in two miles. It was granny gears all the way. But the down hill .... it kept going, and going and going for about five miles. The riders reached Eureka about 2:00. And we are gathered in a coffee shop doing this. Our camp site tonight is grassy and compact. No picnic table but we'll make do.Gotta go to see if I can find some food to fix.

Oops. Rich caught me with an error. CPAs have a way with numbers. Austin is located at 6600 feet not 5,500 ft. I guessed. The grade up was between 8 and 10.
If my math is correct, the ride up to Austin Pass was 1 foot up for every 5 feet forward. Makes me tired to just think about it. That's a 20% grade, which is twice as steep as the road up Pike's Peak.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the blog. I'm flying along with you via Google Earth.
